Three most important things I learned is first that there has to be a protocol at all times when it comes to data meetings or else it will fall off of its purpose to inform and learn from it. I learned that you have to be able to be a good facilitator and model at all times the correct structure in order for all meetings to be successful and purposeful. I also learned that you have to really learn is about being culturally responsive. I thought the lessons on learning about the culturally proficiency continuum that I will admit to falling into that dialogue. I think that it helped me really take a better look at how I can look at data and not get caught up in things we cannot control. If the data team follows protocol and norms they can discover causes they can fix in the school environment and work on passing this information on to the teachers. I also learned that we need to make sure that we celebrate our successes in our data. I think a lot of people see data as showing what's wrong with the school when it can also show what is working well in the school.
The most valuable field experience in my opinion was the Data Inventory because I had a chance to really look into the school itself to analyze what was really being used to gather the data for the school. I think that understand all of the data tools available will give you a better idea on the tools available, and what tools are lacking that could be added to create more meaningful data that can be analyzed.
I plan on using this information that I learned in this course to see how I can help our students reach our student mission. I think that I will want to be a part of the solution to solving the achievement gaps in our schools. I now have tools at my advantage that could be of use to my school to help them. I think the challenges will be people who see this as more work when it really is not more work. It is just giving purpose to the data collection. I think a lot of data gets pushed to the side and not used. We need to create a school culture where all of the data collected from observations to summative assessments are all seen as important tools to help progress our students towards closing the achievement gaps that we have in our district.
I think it was good timing for our cohort to take this class right before we return to our schools.
I hope I will be able to use the tools I learned to help my class succeed at reaching their academic goals.
- What are the 3 most important things you learned during this course?
