Diversity
Being born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia I have watched how the diversity of the city has changed and stayed the same. Growing up in the Northwest side of Atlanta, Georgia, I was brought up with diversity not so much in race but in socio economic status. I was exposed in school attending with students who were in classes from the upper middle class to the lower class of families who lived in the neighboring housing projects. So I grew up knowing that my classmates and I lived very different lives and backgrounds but we were all aiming for the same education no matter what. I think this is why when it came to teaching that I appreciate everyone’s diversity and as an educator I work to make sure that all students are treated equally regardless of the diversity they cannot control.
This program helped me to use my technology skills to make sure that all students on all levels of learning would benefit from the lessons being taught. In South Fulton County, I was exposed to the diversity of English Speaking Other Languages (ESOL) students and the needs they had especially with not just speaking in two languages, but learning how to be successful with English taught subjects. Working with some of the diversity of language as well as socio economic status has helped to build my own consciousness of making sure that the technology that I provide to the students engages them and has connections to everyone’s interest.
I have learned how technology can help to open cultural understanding that students now deal with as they go into classrooms and see as many students who are similar and are different to them. I also liked to hear about the very diverse environments that my classmates were in. I enjoyed being a part of this program to hear and learn about the diversity of the teaching environments of my colleagues. Hearing about their diversity helped me with possible coaching situations where I may have diverse environments like theirs and learn how to best serve all students, faculty and staff in those environments. The things I have done to professionally towards providing for my diverse teaching environments include but are exclusive to the following:
●Creating an equitable classroom by giving all students access to technology
●Differentiating instruction through technology to meet the needs of all students
●Attending professional development to ensure that I am meeting all of the needs of all students with technology
●Collaborating with teachers to make sure that I am addressing the needs of all students through technology
●Allowing students from all levels of learning have a leadership abilities when it comes to technology
●Using technology for challenging and higher order thinking for all students.
●Modeling technology for co-workers to show how they can reach all learners with educational technology.
