Artifact: Data Inventory
Reflection
I created a Data Inventory for the current school I am teaching at to determine the effective digital tools and resources that is used to analyze student achievement data, interpret result, and communicate the findings for improvement of instruction practices and maximize student learning. The student data is usually collected through digital tools like the Computer Adaptive Testing and STAR testing. The students usually are tested using various digital tools and interventions. The data inventory chart I created gave me a very brief look at what the school is using for data collection and who can use it best for helping to improve student learning.
This artifact gave me more insight in knowing that a lot of the data collection is not being used and a lot of things needed to provide the appropriate interventions are being provided through digital tools. The student work is being gathered through more technologically advanced ways in hopes to reach more students. As a teacher I know it has an impact on my development because I need to be knowledgeable in these tools so I can best use it for the students. It does not replace me; the students still need exposure when I have to attend to other students in the group. As a future coach I need to be able to collect student achievement data, analyze it, and interpret the results so I can facilitate other staff and faculty members to do the same. The data inventory showed me how I need to be able to communicate these actions, even in writing, clearly so that everyone can have clarity on how to effectively use data to improve instructional practice and maximize student learning.
I learned that there is so much data that be collected effectively with digital tools and resources that as a coach I need to stay up to date and relevant to my schools’ needs when it comes to showing others how effective these digital tools could be used. If I could do anything different it would be having the ability to implement appropriate interventions. I would have liked the chance to speak with teachers in the school on what interventions would they have used. This was another assignment where I did not have a chance to speak with teachers due to this being completed in the summer. I would have liked to talk to the faculty to get feedback on what they found out what they saw were appropriate interventions. It goes to the part of being a coach to be able to collaborate with various stakeholders when it comes to working with improving instructional practices. You want the input from the people who be applying these strategies and interventions for student improvement. I think I could have received just as relevant information from my own school but since we were working with schools in two different areas of town, I felt that it would not have be authentic to the school where I was gathering the data.
The impact of this data collection tool and assessment will be seen in the ongoing assessments that will take place during the school year. This cycle of collecting and analyzing data will happen all school year and it will be the technology coach’s job to help with making sure that this is going on throughout the school year. Only by using the digital tools consistently throughout the school year will they be able to see if the digital tools are working or if they need to find another tool to help maximize student learning. I had a greater respect for how people who are not the classroom teacher rely on this student data to help understand the school climate and how to best use technology to implement those digital tools to help with student improvement. The impact of student learning is to have students have various tools to help with their development. The data collected helps parents have a better understanding of how their students learn and can be a great tool for them to work with their child at home, which will help with maximizing student learning outside of the school.
