2.1 Content Standards & Student Technology Standards
Candidates model and facilitate the design and implementation of technology-enhanced learning experiences aligned with student content standards and student technology standards. (PSC 2.1/ISTE 2a)
Artifact: Engaged Learning Project
Reflection
In the Engaged Learning Project designed and created a technology-enhanced learning experience by creating a lesson plan that called for the students to make a connection with the historical figures that they were studying in the unit. I would provide the students with an example showing how they can leave a positive digital footprint by showing how they are a part of history and to create an updated All About Me project. I collaborated with teachers to create a project that would be engaging and still stay within the requirements of the standards and objectives. I hope that I will be able to work with a lot of students so I can provide the learning experiences through technology. Since the first unit of Social Studies 3rd grade is just an overview of the standards they would be studying, I believed that with this project could be a great way to engage students in those skills by making themselves the research project before they delve into the historical figures at the end of the year.
I learned the students could do more than I would ever expect. When students are given a digital project or assignment, you learn very quickly how far students are willing to go for projects online. The students are more engaged and stay within the student content standards and student technology standards. By working with the students through modeling and facilitating the design of the learning experience I was able to show the students the higher order thinking and expectations I had of them in this project. The students when you work with teaching and creating projects with those standards and the students understand the objective of the technology that they will be more focused. If I had a chance to do something different I would probably have extended the project over the school year so the students could add throughout the year what they have learned over the school year. The artifact shows that there were content standards as well as technology standards applied to the job.
What did you learn from this experience first and then tell me what you would change…If I had a chance to change anything, I would have tried to get more input from teachers who have successfully used projects like these to engage learning. I did not have a chance to work with teachers who used projects like these. I was the teacher in the classroom doing more with technology than my counterparts. I would have liked to have more input from teachers who incorporated these types of assignments in their lessons in order to have a clearer understanding of the challenges and data on how well, or not well, how these projects worked in the classroom without taking away from other assignments.
I think this project impacted student and faculty development because as a coach, you can show teachers how they can take their instructional delivery and apply it with technology. This is a way to show how you can take lessons that did not use technology and create new engaging technology for students and still produce work that can be assessed on student learning. The students will be assessed informally and formally. The purpose of the project was to make sure that the students understood the characteristics and overlapping themes such as beliefs and ideals. The students will be able to show they are knowledgeable in these skills and make connections when they study historical figures with those similar themes.
