4.3 Diversity, Cultural Understanding & Global Awareness
Candidates model and facilitate the use of digital tools and resources to support diverse student needs, enhance cultural understanding, and increase global awareness. (PSC 4.3/ISTE 5c)
Artifact: AT Implementation Plan
Reflection
I think a lot of teachers believe that students who have diverse student needs require a lot of extra technology and certain types of technology. I was assigned an assistive technology plan where I needed to work with our special needs teacher to see what technology could be used to enhance student learning. In my school at the time, there were no students with severe disabilities. In our school district, students with severe disabilities were placed in certain schools. The students in my school had academic disabilities in reading that were affecting their learning. So after learning about their Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) it was determined that the students suffered from not being able to read, but could communicate verbally. I chose to implement a plan using the technology that was already in place.
I think this artifact demonstrates mastery because it shows how a coach can use technology with students with diverse needs and can enhance their cultural understanding in education. The assignment was to help me understand how to use technology successfully with students with diverse needs. The artifact was a way to show me how I could use some current technology with students with diverse needs so they could be successful in education. They could use the technology to increase their global awareness by using technology to help expose them to educational ideas that they could not read independently. They could use the software to express their thinking when they could not write, but they can talk and the computer program writes for them.
I would have liked to have more time to test working with the voice to writing application over a longer period of time to see if this improved the student learning. I did see a change with the students showing them having a greater interest in their work now they could create it with the application for voice typing. I think I would have also liked for an opportunity to visit schools where students have severe educational disabilities where I could see the adaptive technology used for them. I was able in my research to see various adaptive technologies but I was not able to experience it hands on. I would have liked that opportunity so that I could have my own testimony to the advantages and disadvantages of the various technologies.
The advantage of this artifact is that it goes to student improvement by opening doors to students with diverse needs who needs additional resources through technology to help them with their educational experience. The students who use adaptive technologies are able to experience global awareness and cultural understanding through other means that are not as traditional. The student improvement could be assessed by looking at the growth of the students through formative assessments when they have used the assistive and adaptive technology. For example, if you see student growth has increased with the technology, you can keep the implementation as it since it seems to be successful. It can also let the teacher know if the technology is unsuccessful that may require more looking into the technology that is being used or if it is the assessment. By completing this assignment, I learned how to look out for technology that will help the students achieve their goals on their IEPs and by monitoring improvement through work samples and working with them to make any necessary improvements to the technology implementation, people can see the importance of looking into technology for adaptive technologies that could enhance their learning experiences.
