Reflection
I think as an educator when you want a way to communicate findings to improve instructional practice and maximize student learning, teachers have been using rubrics for years. I had to create a rubric for one of the digital products in class. The class required that we create a rubric that would be used to judge the student’s understanding of the curriculum with the project which they would be judged on. A rubric is always presented to the student at the beginning of the project so that they understand what the final product should look like and how it ties into the curriculum. The students are then shown what high and low achievement looks like and then creates the product. The rubric gives them the guidelines. The teacher can then use the rubric to analyze the student work to see if appropriate interventions should be given or can the student move on.
I have learned that as usually that rubrics can usually be the hardest and easiest digital products to produce. Especially when working with younger students. You need to make sure that the rubric that you create is kid-friendly to understand. The rubric must include all parts of the project to make sure the students know what is expected from every aspect of the project. The rubric when used interpret results and communicate findings to anyone who looks at it. When it comes to administration and parents coming to you asking you questions about the project the rubric is the tool that is created to present that information. So this rubric has to be able to be picked up and understood by anyone looking at it. I think if I had a chance to do it over I think I would just look back and add above standard requirements. I realized that I only looked at meeting the standard and should have pushed towards exceeding the standard to invite that challenge to see who would rise to it.
Rubrics will have an impact on student achievement because it is a tool that is used to help students have a clearer understanding of why they are doing an assignment and they can also be used to assess student achievement. They see the expectations explained in language they understand when it comes to the standards and curriculum of the task. Rubrics also help teachers with making sure that their instruction and delivery of the task will stay within those limits and that they make sure that they are modeling what student expectations are. It is a guide for the teacher as much as the student. It allows for them to see what students are meeting expectations and who may need those appropriate interventions to meet standards.
