Reflection
In my class in Spring 2016, we were asked to look at a lot of various websites related to our readings and during our readings on using digital information and technologies we were asked to look at Podcasts and to report on them. In my March 2016 blob post on Podcast reviews I researched and listened to various podcasts to determine how they can provide safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital information and technologies. I looked into a lot of the various podcasts related to education. I used the blog to talk about how podcasts can be used for providing educational information to students and staff.
I think that this shows mastery of this element because it shows using research based information to show how important podcasting can be towards education. It is using tools that are safe, healthy, legal, and ethical that are available for teachers and students to use. Especially since flipped and blended classrooms are becoming more of a way of life for teaching as class sizes increase and help decreases, teachers need to find ways to provide all students of all learning styles and levels various ways of presenting information.
The safety of using these types of tools requires that educators research the podcasts that they will present. They cannot just randomly picks some podcasts and assign them to students. It may require that teachers even learn to create their own podcasts to use that will be more specific to their classes. I did have a chance to practice creating and posting a blog as well that is on my portfolio site. Teachers can create their own podcasts for lessons and provide them for staff development.
Doing the research into podcasting showed me how much digital information and technologies are available out there and how it is the educator’s responsibility to do the work into finding the appropriate resources that can be used in the classroom. I wish I could have explored other types of podcasts that were student created podcasts. I only looked into educator created podcasts and how it can be used towards redelivery of lessons. I realized now that more student created products also can cause engagement and learning to happen so now looking back, I should have looked into more digital information and technologies that were student created for redelivery of learning.
Completing this assignment can impact student achievement by providing students with safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital information and technologies. This assignment showed me how to use the information from the internet to find safe digital tools that have already been created, or can be created by the teacher or student to improve learning. A way to make sure it is being used is to assess teacher and student uses of the tools. Did the students improve in learning, did the teachers get a better understanding of a concept or student improvement with the tools. I think by having a quick survey on if the tools are working as a great way to see if these tools are doing good or causing work that has no results to faculty development or student improvement.
