Artifact: Current Reality and GAPSS
Reflection
I had to create a Current Reality and GAPSS for the school. I sat down in an interview with the current principal and asked about the overall effectivness with the school’s technology-based learning programs. I had a discussion on what technologies were made available to the teachers and how they should be used in the school. The overall effectiveness of professional learning conducted was to learn about what was available in the school and if it was being used to the fullest ability by all staff and students.
I learned how the school’s weaknesses was the lack of use by the staff to take advantage of the technology available. It was mostly from a lack of training of how to use the tools outside of giving the students a website and having them play on it without having any kind of assessment to know how well or how the students need improvements. This type of program evaluation lets the coach know where to approach the staff regarding professional learning that will help the teachers use the tools more confidently.
The assignment of course could have improved by having a chance to conduct this similar needs assessment with the faculty. This way, the coach can find out if the entire staff is even aware of the technology that is available to them. This would also allow for the staff to admit to their own strengths and weaknesses with the technology and allows the coach to plan for appropriate and meaningful professional learning on deepening teacher content knowledge to implement in the school.
The assignment has a positive effect on faculty development as the staff learns from their strengths and weakness how they can use the technology in their school. The Current Realities and GAPSS for the school is important for the coach and the faculty to work on ways to improve student achievement and it is through appropriate and meaningful professional learning programs that will improve pedagogical skills and increase student learning. It is why these types of needs assessments are important for a coach to use in order to start a school year right with all of the tools for the teachers ready to use technology to enhance learning for all students through the school.
