5.1 Needs Assessment

Artifact: Individual Teacher Assessment
Reflection
I had to choose to pick a grade level or staff member to become their technology coach for a time. I was actually approached by a fellow teacher in my grade level to coach her. Before we started I had to complete an Individual Teacher Assessment to determine strengths and weaknesses to inform the content and delivery of technology-based professional learning programs. I conducted an interview and took a survey regarding her comfort level with technology so I could determine her strengths and weaknesses to determine the best delivery of technology-based professional learning programs.
The assignment shows mastery because it required me to do a needs assessment that will be valuable for me to determine the best course of strategy that will help me to deliver the best professional learning program to help the teacher. This assignment helped me to better understand the teacher that I would be working with. Even though I worked with only one teacher, this assignment gave me a greater understanding of what I would be asked to do with a grade level and faculty. It is important to establish a relationship with your colleagues in order for them to trust you that you are not there to bring them down but to build them up.
The only thing I would have liked to have done differently is to have more time with the teacher to work with other professional learning programs with the teacher I was working with. I had a chance to work with her with a few programs but she actually resigned her position from the school so I was not able to work with her as long as I would have liked to. She appreciated everything I did for her but made a final decision to leave the school last month. I would have liked to continue working with her and seeing her growth in technology.
This assignment goes right to the heart of faculty development because it is about finding the strengths and weaknesses that will help a coach to know the best way to deliver technology-based professional learning programs that will help the faculty become better prepared to provide learning through technology. It also helps with faculty development to deliver engaging lessons through technology. Faculty development is necessary in a school in technology so that teachers can learn how to evolve into 21st century teachers and that means they have to become 21st century learners as well. This can be monitored by the coach and assessed to see if there is growth in delivery and assessment through more technology. There could also be assessment through walkthroughs and trainings with teachers to see how comfortable they are feeling with technology and if they see where their strengths and weaknesses have changed over time. If they feel that they could use more training and development.
